Help! My Cat is Using My Monstera Pot as a Litter Box!

I'm having a real problem with my cat using my monstera pot as her personal bathroom. I can't tell if it's harming the plant or not, but I really need advice. My cat has a clean litter box just 4 feet away from the plant. I know cat poop might act like fertilizer, but I'm worried about the pee. I've been draining the soil whenever she goes, but I fear overwatering my plant. I've had this monstera for four years now! Can anyone help me figure out how to stop this behavior?

Honestly, your cat probably isn't sick. Mine did the same with my fiddle leaf fig. I just stuck in some bamboo skewers and covered the soil with foil. Now my cat’s back to using her litter box. It worked great for us!

Totally seconding the vet visit! If your kitty has pain when she pees or poops, she might associate her litter box with that discomfort, leading her to find new spots. If it's not a health issue, consider placing bamboo skewers in the soil or covering it with foil. That's worked for me before, and it might help keep her out of your pot!

Oh no, but she still goes in her litter box too! I think she might just be reminiscing about digging in my parent's garden.

First things first, I recommend making a vet appointment. Cats sometimes avoid their litter box when they have health issues. It's good to rule that out! If the vet says your cat's all clear, you might want to try putting some tin foil on top of the soil in the pot. Cats generally dislike walking on it and that might deter her from using the pot as a bathroom.

Why do you think a vet trip is necessary?
