Help! My Cats Keep Destroying My Seedlings – What Can I Do?

I've been having a bit of a problem with my cats constantly laying on my seed starting tray, and it's happened three times now! While I'm not upset with them since they're just being their usual kitty selves, I'm quite frustrated because I don't really have a cat-proof place to put my seedlings. I'm planning to buy a plastic greenhouse to keep my plants safe, but I'm concerned about the bent seedlings. Should I leave them alone to recover naturally? Is it a good idea to cut off the damaged parts to promote new growth? Or should I just start over when my greenhouse arrives?

You could cover the trays with something like plastic or netting to protect them. Cats are just one of many hazards to seedlings, so you might need to be creative. Another idea is to stick toothpicks or kabob sticks into the trays; that discourages them from laying down on your plants!

One thing you could try is planting some cat grass for your kitties. That might keep them occupied and less interested in your green babies. It worked for me, so good luck!

It really varies by plant type, but I get your struggle—my cat loves to snack on my seedlings too! You might want to consider adding a second heat mat. Also, be careful with those plastic greenhouses; my cat is obsessed with the zippers and the crinkly sound!
