Help! My Dishwasher Smells Like Wet Dog—Any Ideas?

I've been dealing with this terrible wet dog smell coming from my dishwasher after I run it, but the sink doesn't have the same issue. I've already tried a cleaning cycle and ran some vinegar through it. I also checked the dishwasher drain hose, and two plumbers confirmed it's at the right angle. I even replaced the old dishwasher with a brand new one and switched out the garbage disposal too. Now I'm starting to wonder if the problem lies deeper down the plumbing. My house was built in 2012 and I'm located in the northeast USA. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Have you cleaned out the filter at the bottom of the dishwasher? Sometimes food particles build up there and can cause funky smells. I find that a little scrubbing with a toothbrush does wonders.

Yes, I did clean the filter! It’s weird because the smell stuck around even after I replaced the whole dishwasher.

What brand of dishwasher are you using now? I had a Whirlpool before, and it had a strange odor, kind of like a 'frito wet dog' smell. The Bosch I switched to is better, but I’ve still heard some complaints about smells from different brands.

I totally get that! It's wild to think that the brand might influence the smell. I would recommend checking how far the dishwasher is from the sink. If the drain line is really long, that might be an issue too.

You might want to consider the distance between your sink and dishwasher. If there’s a long drain line, that could be contributing to the smell. Sometimes, it’s a combination of distance and pipe issues.
