Help! My Dog Damaged My Apartment Carpet – What Should I Do?

Asked By CuriousCat12 On

Hey everyone, I just moved into a new apartment and after being gone for just a few hours, I came home to find a 5-foot section of my carpet torn back. I think it might be because of my older dog panicking during a thunderstorm. I managed to pull the carpet and padding back, but the padding has a small hole, and the threshold and doorway to the master bedroom are really damaged. My dogs seem to know I'm upset and are avoiding me right now. Do I need to inform the property manager about this? Also, I wish I could show you pictures of the damage!

It's tough when our pets get scared and cause damage. You might want to hold off on reporting it right away; the property management could think you're going to be a bigger problem if you report so soon after moving in. Just keep an eye on it, especially if you’ll be at work and can’t supervise the dogs. You could also think about getting some temporary fixes in place if you're worried about more damage.

Totally agree! Just make sure your dogs are safe and think about some options like a dog gate or a safe space for them when you leave the house. You can patch the carpet later.

Just a heads up, you might be responsible for any damages that your pets cause. Fixing tears in carpet isn't as simple as just gluing it down—there are a lot of steps involved. Be prepared that you could end up needing to replace the carpet in that area. It’s best to get ahead of it early, especially if you think there might be more issues while you’re out.
