My husband recently decided to paint the ceiling in one of our bedrooms, but for some bizarre reason, he chose to use a can of paint that's eight years old. He mentioned that the paint had a bad odor but went ahead and used it anyway. I initially thought the foul smell was coming from one of our cats, but when I followed the scent upstairs and opened the bedroom door, it was overwhelming. Despite having all the windows wide open, the stench nearly made me sick—it smelled like something had died and decomposed under its own waste. I've never encountered such a horrific smell, and I work with animals every day! I'm really worried that this moldy ceiling could make us sick. I suggested he spray it with bleach, buy some new paint, and repaint it, but I'm looking for more ideas. What else can we do?

Honestly, just send him to deal with it until he paints it properly! Maybe after marinating in that smell, he'll learn his lesson. And an ozone generator could really help clear out the air. But yeah, some fresh paint is definitely needed here!
Wow, that's a nightmare! I'd definitely go with a good quality primer like Kilz to seal that up before repainting. You really don't want that smell hanging around!
LOL, your story cracked me up! For disposing of old paint, you can just let it dry out and then toss it, but be careful, you don’t want it leaking everywhere!

Yeah, Kilz is a strong choice, and it should help cover any odors.
