Help! My LG Washer is Leaking – Should I Try to Fix It or Replace It?

I've got an 11-year-old LG washing machine that has started leaking, and I've noticed water collecting in the pan underneath it. The pooling seems to be mainly under the front left corner, which is where the drain pump filter is located. I did clean out some debris from the filter, but I'm worried about running the washer again since it's on the third floor and I've already noticed a small water spot on the ceiling of the second floor below. I'm trying to figure out if cleaning the filter might have fixed the issue or if I should risk running it again to check. If it's not the filter, would it make sense to repair a machine this old, or should I just look into getting a new one? Also, would it be prudent to replace my dryer at the same time?

There's a decent chance cleaning the filter did help! How much debris did you find? It could’ve been enough to cause a blockage and if that’s the case, it might just need a test run. It’s unlikely to cause too much more damage if you’ve cleared the pan first. Just keep an eye on it while you’re running a load. As for repairs, it can be hit or miss. A service call could be around $200, but if it's just a small part, it could be cheaper. Do you have a model number? That could help in figuring out options for repairs or replacements.

Unfortunately, I didn't note the model number before heading to work, but I'll make sure to check and update later.

If you're at all handy, consider checking it out yourself. Appliances aren’t necessarily complicated. You could save some cash by learning to troubleshoot and fix it. Plus, there are tons of YouTube tutorials that can guide you through the process!

Yeah, but my washer and dryer are stacked in a tight space, and I’m not sure I want to deal with moving them. My husband helping is one thing, but putting it back together? That’s a potential marriage-breaking situation! 😉

I think you should go ahead and run the washer, but stay close by with towels just in case it leaks again. Since it's already 11 years old, repairs can be iffy and you might just end up spending more money in the long run. With pricing going up, it could be smarter to replace both the washer and dryer now instead of waiting for the dryer to fail.

Good point about the price increases! Definitely something to keep in mind.
