Help! My Live Edge Slab Has Sawdust Mounds – What’s Eating It?

I'm planning to make a bar top from this live edge slab I have in my garage, but I've noticed some strange mounds of sawdust accumulating on the floor underneath it. It seems like something's been munching on my wood! Before I finish it with epoxy, what can I do to get rid of whatever is eating it? Am I in trouble here?

I know the feeling! I'm working on a burl myself, and I can actually hear some wood-boring insects nearby, which is pretty unsettling. I've found a few holes and I’m planning to fill them with resin to preserve the wood and hopefully trap whatever's inside. Just be cautious and keep monitoring it!

First off, you definitely want to remove the slab from your garage if possible. You really don't want whatever insect is in there to make its way into your house. In addition, I'd recommend getting it kiln dried, as that will help eliminate any pests. If you're concerned about storage costs or don't have the means to transport it, maybe look into renting a truck or finding local woodworkers who might help?

I hear you! Moving a 12' slab is no small feat. Is there really no other way to deal with this without the kiln?

Not really, it's such a hassle. I just want to get rid of whatever's in there!
