Help! My Mirror Just Broke on Its Own – What Should I Tell My Landlord?

Hey everyone! I'm in a bit of a pickle here. I've been renting this apartment for just 2.5 months and recently, the mirror in the bathroom broke all by itself. My wife and I were in the living room when we heard a loud crash from the bathroom. I'm really confused about how this could happen and I'm worried about how to explain it to my landlord, especially since I'm moving out in two weeks. I definitely feel like I shouldn't be on the hook for this, but I'm not sure how to justify it. Also, we're not in an area with extreme temperatures, if that matters. Here's a picture of it: https://imgur.com/a/GVqRJjL. Any advice? Thanks!

Sometimes it’s just down to the house settling or minor tremors that can lead to cracks. It’s a pretty common issue, and honestly, you were lucky it didn’t shatter everywhere. Just try to communicate this to your landlord. Good luck to you!

It’s possible the mirror was installed poorly or maybe the adhesive was applied too tightly. If the wall expanded or contracted at all, that could make it break. Looking at the photo, it seems like you couldn’t have broken it intentionally since there’s no impact point. Just explain everything straightforwardly to your landlord. If they suggest it's your fault, you can point out how there’s absolutely no sign of an impact!

I agree with you! If it was broken by someone, there would be a noticeable spot where it got hit. Hoping your landlord is chill about it! Good luck!

Exactly! If they’re unreasonable, just stick to your story, it’s not like you smashed it or anything.

It could be thermal stress too. Believe it or not, sometimes mirrors can crack due to tiny flaws in the glass that get worse over time, especially with temperature changes. Stuff like a hot shower followed by the room cooling down can put pressure on the glass and lead to a break. Just tell your landlord honestly, hopefully, they’ll understand.

Yeah, or just explain it was an unexpected break. Hopefully, they’ll be reasonable about it!

That makes sense. I've definitely seen that kind of thing happen; it’s more common than you think. Just be clear and straightforward with your landlord!
