Help! My Mosaic Shower Floor is Leaking – What’s Going Wrong?

Asked By CuriousCat89 On

I've got a mosaic glass tile installed on my bathroom shower floor, and I've been dealing with leaks that are making their way into my basement. I've tried patching up the worn grout in the obvious spots, and that helps for a little while, but eventually, the leaks come back. I've even used caulking on some areas, but it seems like nothing sticks long-term. The bathroom is relatively new; it was done about six years ago. Is this kind of problem common for tile showers, or am I facing an unusual issue? This is my first experience with a tile shower, so any insight would be appreciated!

It sounds like the waterproof layer beneath your tile has failed. Unfortunately, the only solid fix will be to remove the entire shower and redo the base, which is a pretty major project. It’s not ideal, but it’s often necessary when leaks persist like what you’re experiencing.

It sounds like there was some poor workmanship involved, especially if the shower wasn’t properly waterproofed. If a membrane wasn’t used in the pan construction, you’ll end up dealing with this issue. Unfortunately, a complete redo might be your best bet.

This is definitely not typical for a shower that’s only six years old. The tile and grout are supposed to be a decorative finish over a waterproof shower pan. If that pan isn’t watertight anymore, you’ll likely need to tear everything out and start fresh.
