Help! My New Exterior Door Has a Gap – What Should I Do?

I recently installed a new exterior door from Menards, and while the installation was done by a qualified company, I've noticed a small gap where I can see some daylight coming through the bottom corner of the door. Everything else seems to be aligned correctly, but the only fix suggested by the installer would be to adjust the door's alignment, which they don't recommend. I also plan to contact Menards about the missing 7" jamb that I paid for, yet I'm focused on fixing the current gap. There's a corner seal piece in place, but it's about an inch above the actual corner of the door and not doing much. The pre-installed weatherstripping is a Q-shaped design that fits into a channel on this standard 36x80" door. Any advice on how to best seal this gap would be appreciated!

I feel your pain! It sounds like the gap could be a minor issue that can be fixed with better weatherstripping. You might want to try using an adhesive weatherstrip or even adding a frame that could cover the gap. Or, if the existing one isn’t doing the job, replacing it completely might be your best bet!

Great suggestion! Sometimes the original weatherstripping doesn't do the trick, so swapping it out can make a huge difference.

Have you checked how the corner seal is installed? Sometimes, if it's not in the right position, it won't seal properly. You might want to take a look at how it's meant to fit. Also, if you could share a picture of the gap, that would help folks give better advice! It's possible that just adjusting that seal might solve the issue without having to tweak the door too much.

Yeah, a picture would really help! It might be an easy fix if the corner seal isn’t aligned right.
