I've got a serious problem with caterpillars that have wiped out two of my garden plots, including broccoli and wildflowers. I discovered around 100 caterpillars on each plot, and they've destroyed all the leaves and sprouting plants. I'm looking for advice on how to eliminate these pests and prevent more damage in the future. Any suggestions?

To keep those pesky butterflies from laying eggs on your plants, I suggest using nets as a preventative measure. You can find affordable green debris netting on Ebay, and use gas or water pipes to create support for it. Unfortunately, if the caterpillars are already munching away, getting rid of them now can be tricky. I tried netting before, but they found a way in! Maybe consider attracting birds, since they can help control the population naturally.
Instead of killing the caterpillars, think about planting some companion plants! Consider options like nasturtium, holly, and ivy. They can coexist with your vegetables, and I’ve found that my nasturiums attract the caterpillars, keeping them away from my veggies. If you spot a caterpillar on the wrong plant, just gently move it to the companion plant. Check out the picture of my nasturiums getting munched on!
Killing caterpillars isn't the answer! Remember, they become butterflies, which are essential for the ecosystem and pollination. Maybe focus less on your crops and more on supporting the local wildlife. Next year, you could net your plants to keep butterflies from laying eggs, but let the caterpillars thrive. We really need to protect these beautiful creatures!

I’ve got netting up right now, but they’re still inside! Is there anything I can do to take care of them now?
