Help! One Room in My House Smells Like Urine – What Could It Be?

So, we live in a triplex and moved in during the colder months. Everything seemed fine, but now that the weather's warmed up, there's this weird urine smell coming from one specific room and the hallway next to it. We don't have any pets, and as far as we know, neither do our neighbors. At first, I thought I was imagining it, but my girlfriend has now noticed it too. It's strange because the smell is strong in just this area; once you leave the room and hallway, it completely disappears. We don't have any air vents, only baseboard heaters, and all our windows are closed. I'm really stumped on what could be causing this. Has anyone experienced something similar?

Have you checked the flooring in that room? Sometimes urine can get trapped in the subfloor or underneath flooring materials. It might be worth doing a little sniff test to figure it out. If that's the case, enzymatic cleaners made for pet messes could help. However, if it has leaked into the subfloor, you might need to pull up the carpet and padding, clean everything meticulously, and then treat the subfloor before reassembling. Good luck with it!

It's actually laminate flooring. No vents in the house, just baseboard heaters.

You might want to consider that the smell could be from dead rodents. Sometimes, animals like squirrels can get stuck in walls and their decomposition can smell a lot like urine. That could also explain the recent influx of flies you mentioned. Just a thought!

That could make sense! We did hear something unusual in the air dryer vent a while back, but nothing came of it. The smell's been lingering for a bit now, especially near the bathroom nearby.
