Hey everyone, I just had my first encounter with an agave plant and it ended badly. While trying to dig it up for a friend, my hand slipped, and I got poked by one of those super sharp spines right above my finger joint. I know they're sharp, and I probably should've worn gloves—but here we are. Now, I'm finding it hard to close my finger all the way, and it's kind of painful. I've read online that this could lead to some arthritis issues, which has me a little worried. I don't think I'm allergic since it doesn't seem like I had a severe reaction, but should I be concerned about this? What should I do to treat it? Any advice?

You’re not alone! Agave spines can really mess you up. Make sure nothing is lodged in your skin; clean the site well and put some antibacterial ointment on it. Keep an eye out for signs of infection, and don't hesitate to take some pain meds if it hurts. It should start feeling better, but just keep it clean for a few days! And for future reference, gloves are a must!

It sounds like your finger might just be inflamed from the poke, but you should definitely check if there's a bit of the spine still stuck in there. Seriously, take a close look! If you don’t see anything, icing it and taking an over-the-counter pain reliever might help. Just keep an eye on it, and if you notice any redness or if it doesn’t get better in 12 hours, I’d recommend seeing a doctor to be safe.
