I've got this really odd, low-pitched humming noise in one of the rooms in my house. It's quite loud and consistent. The room is located on the main floor of my raised ranch, specifically in the southeast corner. Interestingly, there's no humming in the restroom below or in the neighboring rooms to the east and south. Even when I open the window, the sound doesn't carry outside. It seems to get quieter when I'm closer to the exterior walls, with the loudest point being in the middle of the room near the ceiling. I've ruled out the light fixture as a source.
I've turned off all the power in the house to see if that helps, but the hum is still there. I've considered various appliances like the fridge, HVAC system, and a forgotten transformer, but nothing has worked. I can't feel any vibrations on walls or surfaces when I touch them either.
The weird part? When I went outside, the only place I can hear the noise is right between my house and my neighbor's. They don't have any vents or pipes on that side either, and there's no overhead power lines, so I'm baffled. I suspect it could be some kind of distant industrial fan sending noise through a clear path between our homes. Does anyone have suggestions on how to dampen or block out this noise?

Could it be bees? I know it sounds odd, but there are stories about houses having hidden hives that create buzzing noises. It might be worth checking if there are any spots where they could nest, just in case!
That's super strange! Since turning off the power didn’t help, it definitely seems like it’s not electrical. Have you checked the attic above for any odd noises or something weird? Sometimes just having an empty space can amplify noises from outside. Also, if your neighbors are also experiencing it, they might have some insight too since it's strongest right between your houses.
