Help! Water Leak Under My New Vanity—What Should I Do?

Asked By CuriousCat42 On

I just had my bathroom renovated, and a week later I discovered standing water at the base of my new vanity sink and even found water inside it! The inside shelves are warped, but the exterior looks fine. My contractor sent a plumber who found that the sink faucet wasn't sealed correctly to the sink, causing the leak. While they'll fix the plumbing, I'm concerned about the damage to my $400 vanity sink cabinet. How should I approach this with my contractor? If you're a contractor, how would you handle this situation with a client? Thanks for any advice!

It's tough dealing with plumbing issues right after renovations! Always trust but verify—new fixtures should be closely monitored for leaks after installation. As for your contractor, check your contract for any warranty information. Usually, they provide some sort of coverage on labor and materials, so make sure you know your rights while you’re at it!

Good point about keeping a close eye on it! I did some plumbing work myself, and I left everything open for a month just to watch for leaks.

Yeah, I get nervous too—definitely don’t want surprises like that!

Document everything! Send your contractor photos of the issue along with the plumber’s notes. Let them initiate the next step. It’s important they know about the warped shelves, even if they haven't acknowledged it yet. Make sure they realize it’s not just a simple fix. Shouldn't have to ask more than once for something important like that!

Exactly, they really should address the shelves too. It's part of their responsibility, right?

Honestly, I think the contractor should replace the vanity altogether since it's brand new and you’re already facing issues. If it were me, I’d push for that replacement before they even suggested a repair. Your investment deserves to be protected!
