I'm really puzzled about what's been digging holes in my yard over here in Long Island, NY. At first, I thought it might be groundhogs or rabbits, but I've never actually seen anything in the act. I filled the holes last summer, but they came back within a week. I'd like to find some effective solutions to prevent this from happening again. Has anyone dealt with this before? Also, I considered filling the holes with gravel, but I really don't want to end up with a yard full of gravel pits. Any advice would be super helpful!

Try putting some chicken wire over the holes after you fill them. This might deter the critters from coming back. I'm guessing it's either rabbits or possibly a possum that's been causing the damage. Just keep an eye on it, and good luck!
It could also be your dog if she's allowed outside unsupervised, but if she's not a digger, then it's likely not her. You mentioned a lot of rabbits around, but those holes look a bit big for them. Keep an eye out for other animals like raccoons or foxes too.
We do have a dog, but I seriously doubt it's her. She's usually not making a mess and doesn’t come back muddy. The holes just seem too big for the rabbits we've seen around.
