Help! What’s with the Black Flies Invading My Home?

Asked By CuriousCat123 On

Hey everyone! I'm really struggling with a serious black fly invasion at my house. They seem to be everywhere—on the windows and just buzzing around. I've tried to keep everything clean: no dirty dishes, daily pet litter cleanup, and all food is stored away properly.
I feel like I've tried everything but these flies just won't go away! Could there be something dead hidden in my walls, or a nest I can't see? I even set up sticky blue light traps, but they stopped working. Any advice would be really appreciated! Thanks!

First off, are you dealing with big flies or small ones? Small flies could be breeding somewhere, possibly in your drains. Pouring some bleach or boiling water down the drains can often help with that.
Also, have you considered how long this issue has been going on? If it’s a seasonal hatch, you might just be seeing a lot all at once. I had a similar situation and used a salt gun to pop them, which worked for a while!

They’re pretty small, but it's honestly like a swarm! I've lived all over and never seen this before.

Do you have pets? Sometimes if they have a sore it can attract flies. I've seen that happen before.

It really sounds like you might be experiencing a big hatch, especially if they seem to appear all of a sudden.
You could try turning off all your lights at night, keep one bright light on by a window, and then use your vacuum to suck them up when they gather there. This technique works great for typical house flies! Also, check for any possible entry points like gaps or holes in your home. They might be sneaking in through there!

I went on a fly-swatting spree too, managed to take out about 30 of the little pests!

That could explain why they seem to swarm at night for me too. I'll give it a shot!

You might want to check if you have any houseplants. Sometimes they attract fungus gnats, which could be part of the issue. Just another angle to explore!

You can definitely try saying, "The power of Christ compels you!" three times... just kidding! But seriously, keeping the space clean is key. Maybe invest in some good fly traps to help catch them when they’re most active. It seems like you’ve got the cleanliness part down, just gotta keep trapping them!
