Help with Documenting My Electrical Panel Schedule?

Hey everyone! I'm about to close on a house on the 10th, and while the inspection went really well for a 30-year-old home, I've got some minor repairs to tackle. The seller was nice enough to help with closing costs due to these issues. My main concern right now is the electrical panel; I've been told that the schedule is "a mess" and could use better documentation. Is fixing this on my own a feasible project, or should I hire an electrician to handle it?

If it’s just about documenting the breakers, you might be able to do it yourself! You can use a tone line tracer to help. However, if there are any wires that need to be moved or changed, definitely leave that to an electrician. Given it’s a bit of a mess, getting a pro might be the wiser choice unless you’ve got some electrical experience.

You can actually create a floorplan of your house and track which breakers control which outlets and switches. Just flip off all but one breaker and check what works; it’s pretty straightforward if nothing weird pops up. But seriously, if there’s any chance of an underlying issue flagged by the inspector, just hire an electrician.

I’d recommend calling in an electrician for this. Messy electrical work can lead to some real surprises down the line, so it’s better to be safe! They’ll make sure everything is up to code and properly documented.
