Help with Installing Shelix on DeWalt 735

Hey everyone! I recently tried installing a Shelix cutter head on my DeWalt 735 and ran into some trouble. After trying to hammer it into place, I just couldn't get the bolt on the belt wheel to catch. I even experimented with a rotary thread, thinking I might have messed up the threads by hammering it incorrectly. After hours of struggling, I decided to return it and order a new one. I'm curious—how did you guys manage to install yours? Did anyone else face issues with the OEM nut fitting onto the Shelix threads? Also, I noticed some folks use grease during installation, while others don't seem to need much. Mine didn't come with a lot of grease, so I ended up using some organic grease that works for metal-to-metal contact. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Sounds like you might have hit it too hard with the hammer! It’s important to align it properly before hammering. A little tap should be enough to get it seated without damaging it. As for the nut, it should fit fine, but if it doesn’t bite, check the threads to make sure they’re not worn down. And yeah, a bit of grease can help with installation, but just don’t overdo it; you want it smooth, not gooey! Good luck with your next one!

I had a similar problem; turning it a bit as you hammer can sometimes help. Just don’t force it too much.

When I did mine, I was careful to only use the recommended grease. If your cutter head doesn’t have much grease, a light coating should be fine. But definitely check that everything’s aligned right before hammering it—mistakes can turn costly!

Thanks for the tip! I’ll make sure to check the alignment better next time.
