I've got a tiered patio garden in a newly developed area, and it's a bit lacking in trees and wildlife. While I don't expect to see hedgehogs or foxes, I'd really love to attract some bees and birds. I can pull up a few slabs by the fence, but not too many without causing a problem. The garden has a shady side where I've planted hostas and ferns, and a flower side with roses and perennials. It's a bit of a mismatch, but if I could bring in some wildlife, I'd be thrilled! Are there any low-maintenance and effective ways to encourage these critters to visit?

I've noticed that my catmint attracts lots of bees, so that's definitely a good plant to consider! It's pretty low-maintenance too, so you won’t have to worry a lot about upkeep. Another great idea is to create a small pond in a pot; it can really help bring in wildlife without taking up too much space. Check out resources like RHS for container habitats for more tips!
Definitely consider planting ivy, as it's an excellent late nectar source for pollinators! I’d suggest pulling up some slabs near your fence to make room for that. Also, hardy geraniums and nepeta (catmint) would work well and are low maintenance. They would be perfect for your garden!
I’ve got a ton of ivy covering my fence already, about 80% of it! I didn’t know ivy blooms, but I have had catmint before. The cats always seemed to sit on it until it died, though. I also have ceanothus, which is somewhat similar but isn't doing so great right now.
