How Can I Balance Temperature Between Floors in My Two-Story Home?

I've got a two-story house with the thermostat located upstairs, and I've noticed a temperature difference of about 5-10 degrees between the upstairs and downstairs during both summer and winter. I know heat tends to rise, so I'm considering some solutions. There's a spot in an upstairs closet that connects to the ceiling below, and I'm thinking of adding a duct system to draw hot air from the top and blow it downstairs to help equalize the temperature. I found a fan rated at 2850 m³/h (1677 CFM) and I want to know if I'm on the right track with this idea.

Your idea could work, but have you checked your HVAC system? Adding more return vents in the upstairs rooms might do a better job of balancing out the heat. It’s worth looking into!

Yeah, I hear you—my furnace is in a drywall room in the basement, and adding vents would be tough. But I have another part of the basement with suspended tiles where it’s easy to put in a transfer vent.

Before diving into all that, check the insulation in your attic. Often, blown-in insulation can be poorly applied or damaged. Making sure that’s up to par could really help with temperature regulation.

Good point! I’m sure my insulation is lacking. The house is a double-wide modular and the previous owner put a new roof over it, so I bet there’s not much insulation there. I’m actually considering getting insulation foam quotes soon.

Your concept isn't bad, but just a heads up: make sure any electrical devices you use have proper safety certifications like UL or ETL. Personally, I recommend AC Infinity fans for effective air circulation.
