I'm finding that my over-the-range microwave just doesn't have enough suction power. I maintain it well, cleaning the filters regularly and checking for any blockages, but it still struggles to clear the air effectively. I'm considering switching to a range hood, but I'm unsure how to start this process. What's the first step I should take, and how do I go about installing a new range hood?

Your microwave might not even be venting outside. Sometimes, these units are set to recirculate air through a carbon filter. Check to see if there’s actually air moving through that external vent. If it’s set to recirculate, you can usually change it by moving a plate at the back of the microwave. Look for instructions online or in your manual.
I’d suggest you ensure your installation is correct, as some models might not be vented properly despite having external venting in place. Verify that the blower fan is set to exhaust mode and not recirc mode. A simple mistake here can make your microwave feel less effective. I found this video that might help you with the setup: https://youtu.be/yzUogplROSw?si=4xyIX9t-5Ie4wNSt
Keep in mind that many over-the-range microwaves are preconfigured for recirculation. You may need to redirect the exhaust airflow for proper outside venting, which usually involves an adjustment on the back of the microwave. Also, check the CFM rating of your unit; many offer around 400 CFM, which is decent airflow, similar to most range hoods. If you decide to switch, the first step is to remove the microwave and choose a countertop model instead.
