How Can I Build a Simple DIY Bed Frame with My Son?

Hey everyone! This is my first time posting here. I'm totally new to woodworking and I'm looking to build a simple bed frame for my son. I can't believe I have to spend around $80-100 for a basic one! I'm hoping to just buy some lumber, cut it to size at the store, and screw it all together. Is it really that straightforward, or is there something I might be overlooking? If it is simple, I'd really appreciate some guidance on how to get started! I'm aiming for a size of 90cm x 200cm and want it to be about 10-15 cm off the ground. Thanks for any help!

Building a bed frame together can create some amazing memories! Many years ago, I made one using half lap joints and it turned out great. My daughter still has it covered with all her stickers from back in the day! Even if it costs more than $100, it's the time spent and memories made that really count! Plus, it's a fun activity. Good luck!

I've been in the furniture-making game for a long time, and honestly, you might find that making it yourself isn't as cost-effective as it seems. Between materials and tools, you could easily spend over $100. If you’re determined to build it, consider sturdier joints like mortise and tenon for better support. But if you're just looking for a budget-friendly option, checking second-hand stores might save you money!

Yeah, that's a fair point! I guess I'd have to weigh the value of the experience versus the cost. Thanks for the input!

It's great that you want to take on this project with your son! Just a heads up, using screws alone isn't the best for holding weight. You might want to look into some basic joinery techniques, like half lap joints, which are pretty easy to make with a handsaw. It’ll add stability and keep the frame from wobbling. Plus, it can really enhance the build quality!

I agree! Joinery is key. If you want something even simpler, you might check out pocket hole screws – they’re super beginner-friendly and sturdy!
