How Can I Buy Two Door Knobs That Use the Same Key?

I'm looking to buy two door knobs and want to make sure they use the same key. I know that individual keyed door knobs usually come with different keys, but what about buying a pack of two? Will they have the same key, and how can I guarantee that they'll match?

You can also have them rekeyed at many hardware stores for a small fee, like $8 per lock. It's a simple process where they can align the locks to the key you provide. I did that at Home Depot, and they were really helpful!

That's good to know! I’ll try that if I can’t find keyed-alike ones.

If you're shopping at a big box store, most door knobs typically have a 4-digit code on the back of the package. You want to look for matching codes, as that usually means the locks will have the same key. I've seen it work in a lot of stores in the US, but double-check just in case!

Wow, I didn't know about the code thing! Thanks for the tip!

So you're saying I could just try my key on any handle of the same style? That's interesting!

If you get a two-pack that's labeled as 'keyed alike,' they should both come with the same key. You can also examine the codes on the packaging to be sure. If you have an existing key you want to match, most stores can re-key the locks for you if they're the same brand.

Great, I’ll make sure to check the labels when I go! Thanks!
