How Can I Care for My Landscaping Plants Before I Can Plant Them?

Hey everyone! I just moved into my first home last fall and recently bought some fruit tree saplings and shrubs for my yard. Unfortunately, I'm facing some delays with local digging laws, and I won't be able to plant them for 3-4 days. They were shipped from Georgia to Kentucky, which means they've already been in transit for about 2 days, making it a total of 5-6 days of what I'm sure isn't the best care for these plants.

I've mostly dealt with lower quality plants before, so losing them never felt like a big deal. However, these saplings and shrubs are from a reputable nursery and cost quite a bit for my budget. I'm really worried about them! What steps can I take to keep them alive until I can finally plant them? Any advice would be super helpful!

A great way to keep your plants healthy is to place them in a spot that receives about 50% sun and shade. Aim for mostly cool morning sunlight and then shade during the hotter afternoon hours. Don't forget to water them right when they arrive! They'll be super thirsty after their journey, but as long as you keep the soil moist, they should be just fine for a while.

For the best results, giving them a drink as soon as they get to you is essential. If you can, put them where they get some sun in the morning but are shaded in the afternoon to avoid overheating. Just remember to keep an eye on their moisture levels, and they'll be okay!
