I own a split-level house and rely on a mini-split system with three outlets: one in the upstairs living room, one in the main bedroom upstairs, and another in the downstairs living room. Unfortunately, most of the cold air produced upstairs quickly flows downstairs, which cools my basement nicely but leaves the upstairs too warm. Since I don't have ductwork and can't afford to install any, I'm looking for creative solutions. I'm considering two options: using fans to blow cold air from downstairs to upstairs or creating some temporary ducting between the two living rooms with a fan. I'm unsure what to look for or the type of fan that would work best. Any suggestions?

Have you thought about framing a decorative grate between the upper and lower floors? Installing a small fan there could really help circulate the air more evenly. Plus, it's a bit of a stylish touch!
First things first, check your attic insulation. If it's lacking, some local energy star programs can help you get it fixed, possibly at little to no cost! You might also want to play around with the direction of your mini-split's air vents; using diffuser grilles or diverters can really help direct the airflow better. Lastly, think about your windows too—are they keeping the cool air in? Sun exposure can really affect how your rooms feel throughout the day!
You could try using a desk fan or a column fan pointed up the stairs to help balance the air between the levels. Sometimes just a little circulation can make a big difference!

That's a neat idea! I like the idea of making it look good while also being functional. I'll consider it!
