Hey everyone! I live in a 1940's house in Southern California, where summer temperatures usually peak in the high 70's, occasionally hitting the high 80's. However, even on cooler days, our indoor temperatures tend to reach the low to mid 80's. On particularly hot days, we've seen it spike to a whopping 91 degrees inside! I recently noticed that a lot of the heat seems to come from the ceiling, which actually feels warm to the touch.
Our attic has no visible insulation, and we have soffit vents spaced about every 5.5 feet. I'm unsure about other ventilation options in the attic due to the tight space. I'm looking for effective suggestions to help cool down the attic—and subsequently, my home—during these scorching summer months. Thanks in advance for your help!

Insulating your ceiling is a great start! You might also want to think about installing a ridge vent or another higher vent on the roof to improve airflow in the attic. This can significantly help with cooling.
Getting an attic fan installed could really help. Just make sure your new vent can handle the fan's capacity. It’ll help push out all that hot air that's been building up!
Consider reaching out to your power utility company. Many of them have programs that offer insulation assessments. You could even score free insulation, low-interest loans, or reimbursement for HVAC improvements!

Definitely! A good fan can make a huge difference. I recommend using a thermostat to control it so it kicks on automatically when it gets too hot.
