I've got two filing cabinets in my breakfast nook next to a baker's rack. Since my house is pretty small, there's nowhere else to put them. I'd love to build a simple 'cabinet' that fits over the filing cabinets—something a bit wider and tall enough to match the height of the shelf on the baker's rack. My husband prefers functionality over looks, but I'm really not a fan of the utilitarian style that's currently there. I need it to be lightweight but able to hold around 5-10 pounds on top. I'm considering making a frame and using shiplap or some similar material for the sides and doors. I'd appreciate any ideas or pictures! Thanks in advance!

The biggest challenge you’ll face is actually the doors. It’s crucial to make sure they’re straight, not warped, and close perfectly without binding, which needs some skills and tools. Check out some YouTube videos on cabinet door making for tips. You could also look for pre-made doors online or at local stores. If you have a Habitat for Humanity store nearby, they can be a goldmine for finding doors or even whole cabinets that can be modified!

I really want to do hidden hinges but might struggle with that. My son can help, though! I’d love sliding doors like in armoires. I’ll check around for something I can adapt if needed. Thanks for the tips!
