How Can I Deter a Groundhog from My Garden Without Harm?

Hey everyone! I'm quite new to gardening and owning a home. I've noticed a groundhog seems to have taken a liking to my garden bed, which is right against the back of my house. It's been digging right next to the concrete foundation. I'm aware it's not able to dig into the wall, but I'm concerned about the potential risks to my plants and the structure itself. I don't want to kill the groundhog; I'm looking for effective ways to deter it instead. Any suggestions?

Are you sure it's a groundhog and not a mole? They tend to dig for grubs and worms in the soil. I'd suggest double-checking before you take action. But some people do recommend getting rid of them, as they can reproduce quickly and cause ongoing issues. But if you're not up for that, just know that groundhogs tend to stick around if they find a good food source!

Thanks for the heads-up! I’ll keep an eye out for more signs. I really don’t plan on harming them, though.

Honestly, I think groundhogs get a bad rap! If you don't mind them munching on some plants, it's usually not a big deal. But if you're worried about your garden, you could consider putting up a cage or a fence around the areas you want to protect. From my experience, they love to snack on lawn clover, so a little barrier could help!

Great idea! I’ll definitely look into fencing off the garden.
