How Can I Disable a Lock on an Indoor Door Handle?

I'm looking for some tips on how to disable a lock on an indoor door handle. My father-in-law has this habit of locking every door, which often leaves people locked out. I've tried finding specific guides online, but I'm not having much luck. I want to figure out a way to disable the lock mechanism so that it spins freely. We've had multiple conversations with him, but he just insists on locking everything because he's worried about security. Any advice would be much appreciated!

If you're handy, you can modify the lock itself. I did this with a Kwikset lock by opening it up and cutting the plastic shaft inside so that the lock tab turns freely. This way, it can't be locked while still allowing easy access through the deadbolt.

THIS is exactly what I needed! Thanks for the tip!

Another option is to just replace the locking handle with a non-locking one. This won't stop him from using the deadbolt, but at least the indoor handles would be easy to open without worry.

True, but knowing him, he'll probably just keep locking the deadbolt! 😂

One simple solution is to make sure everyone has a key when they leave the house. If you really want to avoid that, consider getting a digital lock that can be opened with a code. This way, your father-in-law can still lock the door for peace of mind, but you won't have to worry about finding a key all the time.

That's a great idea! Also, consider hiding a spare key outside in a clever spot, just don’t put it somewhere obvious like under a mat!
