How can I effectively get rid of sticker plants in my yard?

Hey everyone! I've just moved into a new house, and my backyard is absolutely overrun with sticker plants. It's become impossible to let my dogs run around out there. I found a landscaper who suggested stripping the yard down to bare dirt and removing everything, including the grass, before applying weed killer. However, another person mentioned that I might actually need to burn the plants to fully get rid of them, which I'm a bit confused about. Since it's a small yard, I'm okay with starting fresh—whether that means laying down new grass, sod, or even opting for a mix with rocks or gravel. I'm really just looking for the best approach here, especially since I'm cautious about using weed killer with my dogs around. Also, any advice on how to replace the yard with grass after it's stripped down to dirt would be appreciated!

Are you talking about goat heads? I'd probably fire that landscaper if he plans to use weed killer right away without considering the plants' leaves. Weed killer works best when it can penetrate the leaf surface, so typically you’d spray it on, let it sit for a few days, and then reapply as needed. After that, you can remove the dead plants and apply a pre-emergent if you're laying sod. Let me know if you have any more questions!

Thanks for the advice! When you mention a pre-emergent, is that safe for dogs? I'm just really cautious about using any chemicals since they love munching on grass.
