How can I extend the height of my son’s basketball hoop?

I recently moved into a house that has a basketball hoop mounted on an 8-foot tall pole which is 4 inches square and buried in concrete. The universal mount I bought can only raise the hoop to 9 feet, 4 inches at its maximum height, and I'm wondering if there's an easy way to extend the pole height without having to jackhammer it out. I'd prefer to find a sleeve or some kind of extension to raise it further. I'm fairly handy with tools but I'm no welder. Any suggestions?

You could look for a mobile welder to add a steel extension to your pole. They can often create a custom solution and it's likely to look neater and be sturdier. Just search for local welders who do that kind of work.

Sounds like a good option! I'll check around for welders in my area.

Why not just start dunking on that 9'4" hoop? It's a good height for a younger player. Impress him with some cool dunks, he might not mind the height after that!

Haha, tough love! If he's dunking, he's definitely ready for it!

Another idea is to get a steel sleeve with a 4-inch inner diameter. Drill some holes in it to bolt it onto your existing pole, then attach another pipe on top. Just make sure there’s at least 4 inches of overlap to keep it stable, though it may wobble a little compared to a solid pole.

Thanks for the suggestion! Hopefully, that’ll work without too much hassle.
