How Can I Figure Out Where Drain Flies Are Coming From?

Hey everyone! In my previous post about drain flies, I got some helpful advice, but now I have a more pressing question. How can I determine if these pesky flies are really coming from my drain? Since they thrive in organic matter, I'm planning to do a deep clean in my shower, but what if the shower isn't the actual source? Any tips on pinpointing where they might be coming from would be greatly appreciated!

Drain flies usually hang out in the water that's stuck in the p-trap. To tackle them, you can use methods similar to those for fruit flies. A simple trick is to set out a cup of red wine or apple cider vinegar covered with plastic wrap and poke a few small holes in it — they’ll be attracted to it. Also, flushing your drain lines with cleaner every so often can really help eliminate a chunk of them. After that, you can use vinegar traps for any stragglers.

I’ve found that putting an upside-down bowl over the shower drain has worked for me. It traps them in there, making it easier to catch or kill them. Also, don’t forget that their name could hint at where they’re coming from!

I’ve seen those little flies pop up in all sorts of places! They can be found in drains, potpourri, potted plant soil, or even in old decorative soaps. If you want a quick fix, common insecticides usually do the trick. There's this product I use called bio-mop for drains—it not only gets rid of the flies but cleans out the organic matter they feed on too!
