How Can I Find Non-Flowering ‘Weeds’ Seeds for My Terrarium?

I'm on the hunt for seeds to create a terrarium filled with the kinds of plants that usually get labeled as 'weeds'—you know, those random ones that pop up everywhere and nobody really pays attention to. Just to be clear, I'm NOT looking for marijuana seeds! It's been frustrating because whenever I search for weed seeds, all I find are options for cannabis. I'm specifically targeting short, non-flowering plants (preferably under an inch tall) that you'd find in meadows or forests, like clover. Does anyone know where I can buy these kinds of seeds, especially on the East Coast of the USA?

Honestly, I think your best bet is figuring out which invasive weeds are common in your area. You can find info on how to identify them, and then try harvesting the seeds yourself. Since there's no real market for these types of plants, you won’t find them being sold. Scouting your local area could also be a fun challenge!

If you're open to it, a lot of pollinator seed mixes contain plants that are considered weeds because they're often not native. Another idea is to just check out some weedy areas or vacant lots. Grab a bucket of soil, and you'll likely scoop up a bunch of seeds from the local plant life that thrives there. That way, you can have a truly wild terrarium!

The term ‘weed’ covers such a broad range of plants, and there's not a big market for things people don't want! It sounds like you might actually be looking for ground covers instead. However, if you want something under an inch tall, you might want to consider moss options, since most ground cover plants tend to be taller. I'd suggest searching with terms like 'non-flowering ground covers' or 'lawn alternatives'—that might help you find what you're looking for!
