How Can I Fix a Bad Mortise Cut on My Door Jamb?

I have a door jamb with a poorly done mortise cut around the strike plate, and I'd like to repair it without replacing the whole jamb. I'm currently working on painting it and want to tidy this up. Does anyone have tips or best practices for fixing this type of issue?

One way to fix that is to scrape away any paint around the area, then glue a piece of wood over it. After that, you can create a new inset for the strike plate. A paint stirrer could work well as it's usually the right thickness!
