How Can I Fix Double Hung Windows That Won’t Stay Up?

I've just moved into a house with double hung windows and I'm facing some problems. The primary issue is that the top sash on almost all of them only stays up thanks to the lock mechanism, which isn't a great seal. Additionally, there are some gaps and sagging in these windows. What can I do to fix the sagging and how should I handle the gaps?

Could you post some pictures? It would help figure out what kind of windows you have—are they wood or vinyl, and are they original or replacements? That info can really change how to approach the fix!

It sounds like the problem might be related to the sash cords or springs. If your windows are older, they might use sash cords and weights; if they’re newer, they could have spring balances. Replacement parts are usually available, and the repair is definitely feasible without swapping out the whole window. Thanks for the video link! I’ll take a look at it to see if it applies to my windows.

You might just need to replace the springs inside the sash. There are websites where you can find window parts, like Swisco: https://www.swisco.com/. They should have everything you need to get your windows working properly again.
