How Can I Fix My Cabinets When the Wall Isn’t Plumb?

I've run into a bit of a problem during my cabinet installation. The drywall and framing aren't plumb, with the bottom part sticking out more than the top. This pushes my cabinets out from the wall, and to keep the countertop overhang consistent, there's about a half-inch gap between the back of the countertop and the wall, while the bottom of the cabinet is pressed against it. I'm stuck with the idea of putting a border around the top of the countertop (which is butcher block), and my wife isn't thrilled about it. I'm trying to explain that this is just the nature of the wall not being plumb, but I'm looking for any suggestions to fix this issue. Any thoughts?

One way to tackle this is to scribe the countertop to match the wall, but you'll need to account for the extra depth to keep everything aligned properly. You could either glue up an extra row of butcher block to create a seamless fit or add a layer of 5/8” drywall behind the cabinets to help create a better fit for your existing counter. Just be cautious about how this will integrate with the rest of your wall setup. A tile backsplash with a backer board is also an option to cover any gaps!

There are definitely ways to handle this! You could either install the counter flush against the wall, sand down the back of the cabinet box to fit better, or simply add a backsplash to cover the gap. It’s essential to measure everything accurately beforehand to avoid these kinds of issues, as this can really impact the final look.

You might want to try covering the gap with a thicker backsplash. It could help smooth out the transition and make it look more intentional rather than a fix for the uneven wall.

Yeah, we’re trying to avoid anything that seems like a quick fix, but it's a thought!
