I'd suggest using a Wago 221 inline splice for this job. The wire is likely 18 AWG solid, but the great thing about Wagos is they can handle various gauges. Just check how much wire you have left to work with before you start.
I looked up the Wago, and I'm a bit worried if I'll have enough wire for it. Do you think there's a way to check without cutting anything else?
