How Can I Fix My Short HVAC Thermostat Wire?

I've been struggling with my HVAC system for the past two years, thinking it was broken, and it's definitely old and needs replacement, but money's tight right now. My teenager recently took off the thermostat cover and discovered a cut wire. It seems too short to reconnect. I've seen mentions of using a butt connector, but I'm not sure what gauge wire I need for that. I wanted to share a picture but I found out that's not allowed here. I'm a single mom with little knowledge of wiring, but I'm willing to try fixing this myself. Any suggestions or step-by-step guidance would be really helpful!

I'd suggest using a Wago 221 inline splice for this job. The wire is likely 18 AWG solid, but the great thing about Wagos is they can handle various gauges. Just check how much wire you have left to work with before you start.

I looked up the Wago, and I'm a bit worried if I'll have enough wire for it. Do you think there's a way to check without cutting anything else?
