How can I fix my slipping drill press?

I've got a Jet JDP-17DX drill press that's about 10 years old, and it's been slipping whenever I apply pressure with the drill bit. I took the belt off to check things out and noticed that I can twist the chuck and arbor, but the spindle is just spinning without moving the pulley. I'm trying to figure out how to tighten the pulley onto the spindle, but the owner's manual doesn't give me clear instructions. Any advice?

If the spindle is spinning but the chuck isn't turning, try giving the chuck a solid upward whack with a 2x4. Sometimes it can just be an interference fit like a Morse taper that needs a little help to connect properly.

If you can't find the set screw or a key, it might help to check if you're missing the 'Pulley Set Nut' (part no. 10606904). It can be tricky to know when it went missing, but I've had tension issues for ages before realizing it was gone. You might be able to find a similar nut at your local hardware store, but it’s also pretty cheap online if you want a direct replacement.

It sounds like there should be a set screw in the pulley that you can tighten. It could be noticeable as a small hole in one of the grooves or possibly underneath the largest step of the pulley.

Also, take a look at the shaft from above to see if it has a keyway. If it does, make sure that the key is still intact.

Thanks for all the tips, everyone! After checking everything, it turns out the nut that holds the pulley on had actually come off and was hiding under the pulley. I was relieved it was just that; I needed a 1-1/4” socket to get it back on. The drill press is back to working like new after struggling for 5-6 years!

If nothing seems to work, consider looking into Wen drill presses for a good budget option, or check out FB Marketplace where you can find plenty of used tools.
