How Can I Get a Utility Pole Moved From My Front Yard?

Hey everyone! I'm looking for some advice on an issue I've got. I bought my house about five years ago, and there's a utility pole right in the middle of my front lawn. It's really annoying, and I'm wondering if there's anything I can do to have it moved without having to foot the bill myself. Is it normal for utility poles to be placed so close to a house? Any thoughts or tips would be greatly appreciated!

First, you'll want to find out who actually owns the pole and check what easements exist on your property. Most likely, the utility company has an easement that allows them to put it there. If they do, you may be able to ask them to move it, but just know you would likely have to pay for it.

Exactly! Easements should have been disclosed when you bought your house, so check those documents too.

Most homes have utility poles nearby, but having one right in your front yard can be a hassle. Unfortunately, getting it moved might be super expensive or even impossible. Some people have had quotes in the thousands just to have lines buried instead, plus long wait times. Don't be surprised if the utility company isn't willing to help without charging you a lot.

Yeah, my neighbor got a quote to bury their lines, and PG&E wanted something like $3k per linear foot with a multi-year wait. It can get ridiculously pricey.

Honestly, if that pole's been there for over five years, it's probably too late to complain about it now. If you do want to pursue having it moved, be prepared for hefty costs. It's not uncommon for those services to go well into the tens of thousands. But hey, if you’re crafty, why not decorate it for the holidays? You might get a kick out of it until someone tells you to take it down!

This is a solid plan! If nothing else, think of it as an unusual decoration!
