I've been dealing with a mouse infestation in my basement since the house across the street was renovated. Despite setting traps and patching holes, they keep coming back. Should I completely empty the basement to make it less inviting for them? I'm worried about my dogs since mice can carry diseases. What can I do to effectively get rid of the mice?

Hiring a pest control company might be a smart move since they know all the sneaky places mice can enter. In my experience, they can spot entry points you might miss. Also, if you're considering traps, bucket traps are great. Just make sure to keep any food sources away from areas where your dogs can access them. And if you can handle it, cleaning out your basement could help discourage them too!
It sounds like you've got a tough situation! The first step is definitely identifying how they’re getting in. I'd recommend looking for any holes larger than a dime and sealing those up. Using steel wool or caulk can help. For trapping, snap traps with peanut butter as bait are the classic go-to. Avoid using poison inside because if they die in the walls, the smell is awful. Put poison bait stations outside instead, where pets can't reach them. Good luck!

That's a solid suggestion. Those bucket traps can really maximize your catch! Using peppermint oil can help keep them out of your living areas while you tackle this problem.
