How Can I Harden Soft Wood Without a Plastic Layer?

I have some Peruvian walnut that I planned to use for a box, but it's way softer than I expected. Now I'm considering my options – is there a way to harden this wood without covering it in plastic? I saw someone use epoxy to stabilize softwood in a video, where they wiped it off to avoid a thick layer. I've never used epoxy before, so I'm not sure if that's a good approach. Should I just switch to a harder wood, like black walnut?

You might want to check out "Wood Hardener" from your local paint store. I spotted some at Sherwin Williams, but I’m not sure about its effectiveness. It could be worth trying!
