From my experience, it's best to break down the project into smaller, manageable parts. Start with a Raspberry Pi and a touchscreen, where you can install an OS and play some games. Make it portable by adding a power bank and maybe even set up a mic for voice chat. Begin with quick, fun projects that won't take more than 30-90 minutes. Save the soldering for later; once you get more comfortable with the smaller builds, you can explore that step.
