How Can I Improve A/C Efficiency in My 2-Story Home?

I own a two-story house, around 5,000 sqft, with four bedrooms upstairs and the primary suite downstairs. Each area has its own split system HVAC unit. The primary unit cools to 73°F, while the upstairs is also set to 73°F. However, I've noticed that overnight, the upstairs bedrooms can creep up to 77°F, making it uncomfortable despite having ceiling fans. If I lower the upstairs thermostat to 72°F or even 71°F, it ends up feeling too cold in the open space at the front due to airflow from the downstairs unit. Last summer, a contractor suggested rerouting my duct system for $15K, but they didn't explain the need well enough for me to understand. Since my home was built in 1992 and has had regular HVAC maintenance over the last ten years, I'm looking for other solutions to optimize the A/C without going for such an expensive fix. Any advice?

It sounds like the thermostat for the upstairs might not be in the best spot. If it's too close to the open area, it could be getting false readings from the warmer air around it. You might want to consider moving it or adding a remote sensor if your system allows that. Also, check if your ducts have enough return air inlets; that can make a big difference when it comes to cooling efficiency. Might be worthwhile to have an HVAC tech take a look at the airflow and see if a simple adjustment can help before looking at major renovations.
