I live in a 1900s home and we're experiencing our first summer heatwave. The second floor, especially the master bedroom, is extremely hot. The previous owners installed California closets that block the vent, which doesn't help the airflow. I was considering a register booster, but I'm not sure if that would work due to the blockage. Is my best option a mini split AC unit or a portable AC?

A mini split system would be a great choice for your situation, as it will provide dedicated cooling to your bedroom. Additionally, if you have an attic, consider installing an attic fan to help vent out hot air. Just make sure to check your attic insulation, too—sometimes that heat just radiates down from the ceiling. A ceiling fan could also help circulate the air, even though it sounds like you’re already using a couple of fans!
If you’re not ready for the mini split this year, might be worth checking out those portable AC units. They typically don’t need complicated installation and could provide some relief until you can get a more permanent solution.
Definitely look into a mini split if you can manage it! Just keep in mind that if you don’t have an attic, venting out hot air could cause negative pressure in your living space. That’s something to consider before installing anything that needs proper airflow.

I hear you on wanting a cold room! We have a ceiling fan running constantly and still struggle with heat. If a mini split isn’t in the cards this year, you might also look into portable AC options for now.
