How Can I Install a Handrail on a Walkway Without Concrete?

I'm trying to figure out how to install a handrail for a small bump on my front walkway. I've got stepping stones, but there's a root from a cherry blossom tree that's creating a trip hazard. Ideally, I'd like a simple and sturdy way to set up a handrail without having to screw into anything or pour concrete, especially since I'm hoping to sell my house in a year. Any ideas on how I can just put something in the dirt?

You might have to sink the posts pretty deep if you're just relying on soil to hold them. A depth of about 3 to 4 feet should do the trick, but it could be tricky with the tree roots in the way. It might actually be easier to lift the stones and level out the ground if you're looking for a more stable solution.

Yeah, I've tried leveling the ground before, but the roots always come back. Wish it was easier!
