How Can I Install an AC Unit Without Windows in My Condo?

Asked By ChillZone77 On

I'm living in a top-floor condo with a master bedroom that has no windows. The only exit to the outside is through glass French doors that lead to a small patio. Summers are brutal, and despite using sun-blocking curtains and keeping our ceiling fan running, it still gets unbearably hot at night. I'm considering an AC unit but I'm not sure what kind would work without any windows. Does anyone have suggestions?

If you have any exterior wall space beyond the glass, you might consider getting a portable AC unit with a vent that fits through a hole you can make in the wall. It's about 8x8 inches, so it's not too big, and it just looks like a small vent outside.

The wall with the French doors is indeed an exterior wall. I could check with the HOA about that.

I had a similar problem, and here's what I did: I accessed the attic and redirected the air vents from the bathrooms to my bedroom. Now I have three vents blowing cool air in. Also, I got an Ecobee thermostat with remote sensors, so it keeps the room temp just right at night!

That sounds like a solid idea, but I need to figure out where our attic space is first.

Have you thought about a mini-split system? It's a great option because it doesn't require windows or ductwork, just some piping. Keep in mind, you might need a pro to install it unless you're handy with HVAC stuff.

Definitely check with your HOA first to see if that's allowed.

Do you own or rent the place? It's odd to have a bedroom with no airflow. If you have other windows in the condo, maybe you could install an AC there. Swamp coolers are another option. You can even make a DIY air cooler with a styrofoam box and ice! A pedestal fan with a damp towel could help too.

We're technically renting since my fiancée's parents own the place. AC isn't common here because summers weren't so bad, but lately, it's been heating up quite a bit.
