How Can I Keep Birds from Eating My Seedlings?

Asked By SunnySkies88 On

I woke up to find that almost all my okra and shishito seedlings were taken right out of the soil by birds! They even came back and finished off the last one a few hours later. I'm looking for effective scare tactics to keep these birds off my balcony so they don't destroy any more of my plants. Any suggestions?

Using chicken wire cages around your plants is a solid option! Another idea is to provide an alternative food source, like birdseed and feeders, to attract them away from your seedlings. Plus, having birds around can actually be beneficial since they'll eat pests that can harm your plants!

I appreciate the tip, but I live on a top floor in Chicago, so I can't really do that. Thanks anyway!

Have you considered netting your planters? It can really help keep the birds out without blocking off your limited balcony space.

That's an option, but I'm looking for something that'll scare them off instead of just blocking them out.
