How Can I Learn to Be a Handyman Without Formal Training?

I want to become a handyman capable of fixing major issues around the house, but I don't have anyone to teach me and I can't afford carpentry school or training programs. YouTube is helpful for some things, but I find it doesn't always provide the depth of knowledge I need to handle bigger problems, especially when it comes to fixing things correctly. Recently, I've had a serious leak in my doublewide mobile home that has caused significant damage, and I want to tackle repairs like this head-on but I need guidance on where to start. How can I learn the skills necessary without spending a lot of money?

Honestly, experience as a homeowner has taught me a ton. Begin with simple tasks like changing out receptacles or fixing a leaky faucet. For your leak issue, bring in a plumber to handle that part; then you can focus on replacing any damaged subfloor. It may seem tough now, but just remember—it's just wood and screws! You can learn as you go!
