How Can I Learn to Use a Multimeter Effectively?

I've been into DIY for quite a while thanks to shows like This Old House and YouTube tutorials, but there's one tool I've struggled to understand: the multimeter. I'm looking for a good YouTube channel or other resources that teach the basics in a complete way, without dragging things out. I've done some basic wiring such as replacing switches and outlets, and I own an outlet tester and know how to turn off breakers. However, I find it challenging to test switch connections or check if a stator is charging a battery. Any recommendations? Thanks!

To get started with a multimeter, make sure you know about voltage, amperage, ohms, and continuity. Those are the fundamentals you need to grasp first! It sounds basic, but understanding these concepts will really help you in troubleshooting. You seem to have a good foundation already with your DIY projects.

Thanks for the tip! I get the definitions but I'm having trouble with the actual measuring process.

You can find helpful videos by searching for 'multimeter basics' on video platforms. Just make sure you're looking for ones that cover practical usage. I’ve seen some tutorials that break down how to measure voltage and resistance in ways that make it clearer. Unfortunately, it can take a bit of searching to find the right one for your learning style.

I've tried searching a lot but haven't found one that clicks for me yet. Just trying to make sure I'm not missing anything.

What specific things do you want to learn? I’m a controls engineer, so I can point you in a good direction. If you’re working on machines, you’ll want to know how to check if parts like stators are performing correctly. Diagnosis is key!

I often need to troubleshoot machines, like my mower that killed two batteries and my motorcycle that wouldn’t start. I suspect battery issues often, but I think some tools like the multimeter could help me figure out what's really going on.
